Kissimmee, FL| After dropping a 4-2 decision to Montclair St., the St. Joseph's College softball team earned its first win of the season with a 6-1 victory over Beloit University at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL on Thursday afternoon.
With the split the Golden Eagles improve to 1-3 on the season as Montclair improves to 4-3 and Beloit slides to 1-7.
Montclair 4, SJC 2
Senior Lyndsay Smocer got SJC on the board first in the top of the second when her single scored junior Sandra Foster. Smocer, who advanced to second on the throw, would score with the next at bat when she, after stealing third base, advanced home on an error by the Montclair catcher to double the Golden Eagles' lead (2-0).
Montclair's Alex Zulla's two-RBI single to right field in the bottom of the third knotted the game up at two, and then in the bottom of the fourth Kaylee Powers scored Samantha DiClementi with a sac fly to give the Hawks the 3-2 lead.
Elana Radesich's RBI double to left in the bottom of the fifth would cap off the game's scoring as Montclair earned the 4-2 win.
Junior Lauren Buturla earned the start for SJC and allowed three runs in four innings of work.
SJC 6, Beloit 1
Kaity Grzeszklewicz's double in the top of the fourth saw the Buccaneers take a 1-0 lead, but in the bottom of the fourth sophomore Elizabeth Rohme scored Ashley Steponaitis via a sac fly to center to knot the score up at one.
Junior Kristin Arbiter put the Golden Eagles in the lead in the bottom of the fifth when her two-RBI triple saw Valerie Scura and Smocer advance home.
Three more runs in the bottom of the sixth allowed SJC to double its run total and cruise to a 6-1 victory.
Foster earned the start on the mound and struck out one batter in 5.0 innings of work to claim the victory. Buturla threw 2.0 innings and recorded two strikeouts.
The Golden Eagles continue play at the Rebel Spring Games tomorrow, March 10, when they face Thomas More and Defiance at 9:00am and 11:15am.
